Book Review: Job Searching with Social Media for Dummies

Posted on September 7, 2011. Filed under: Book Review | Tags: , |

A few weeks ago I was approached by Joshua Waldman who was just finishing Job Searching with Social Media for Dummies. He knew that I career consulted and that I was an avid fan of networking via social media. He asked if I’d be interested in reviewing the new publication.

I’ve long been a fan of the Dummies series of guides. I’m always impressed that they’ve been at the forefront of breaking down the most current topics into bite-sized manuals for the every day user, so I was more than happy to take a first peak.

I have to say, both the Dummies concept and Waldman did not let me down. I really appreciated that it’s as current as current can be regarding relevant job searching tips. I’m still baffled when people approach me more concerned about how their resume looks and reads and they toss the gold mine of social media to the wayside. Social media is exactly where today’s job search should be focused.

Gone are the days of pretty resumes on fancy paper – sorry FedEx Kinko’s!

The most efficient way to conduct today’s job search is via networking and add online social networks to the mix is like adding gasoline to a little wildfire. Boom! Now you’re cooking!

Waldman hits all the big players including LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter and does a great job breaking each one down with realistic tips and screenshots. He also lists places for the reader to go online to grab updates . . . Goodness knows there will be updates!

I’m also impressed with mention of video resumes. While, I haven’t seen much of it yet, I have seen a few applicants using video and believe me they grab recruiters’ attention. Video has still to really make it big, but it will certainly become part of job searching in the very near future.

So, bravo to Waldman and another successful addition to the Dummies series. I know I’ll be encouraging my clients in job search mode to pick up their own personal copy!
