Transaction Management Sr. Analyst – PayPal – San Jose, CA

The PayPal Global Core Payments group is responsible for defining and managing global payment solutions and partnerships that enable the movement of funds into and out of the PayPal system. Transaction Management Sr. Analyst, a critical and highly visible role of Global Core Payments, will manage transaction expenses logic and provide insights/analytics to optimize transaction expense.


• Manage transaction expense logic and process by working with various parties – markets, platform, data management, to design data architecture, ensure the relevant cost data captured correctly in Teradata, which is critical to manage transaction expense

• Develop statistical and financial models to analyze the business impact of new initiatives, changes to existing initiatives (e.g. contract re-negotiations), process improvements and fee changes

• Support initiatives to optimize transaction expense

• Provide analysis and recommendations on transaction costs to support the markets, compliance, strategy and GCP platform teams

• Maintain and enhance key business reports, and communicate the trends and opportunities

• Engage in end-to-end project management, including problem/project scoping, methodology/approach, fact/data gathering and manipulation, analysis and modeling, problem solving, and communication of insights and recommendations.

• Present business insights to multiple levels of management across business units and functional areas

• Develop strong working relationships with cross-functional groups across the organization


• 4-7 years of experience in analytics/quantitative role in banking, consulting or related industries

• Demonstrated excellence in quantitative analysis

• 2-7 years experience with SQL (preferably on Teradata), and a good understanding of relational databases(foreign keys, primary keys, normalization etc.)

• High level of proficiency in Base SAS and SAS Enterprise Miner

• Solid knowledge of UNIX environment and basic UNIX scripting

• High level of proficiency in Excel, Access and PowerPoint

• Strong problem-solving & multi-tasking skills

• Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills

• Ability to ensure quality of analytics with the mindset of big business picture

• Working in cross-functional and cross-cultural teams, and be able to communicate technically intricate concepts/results in business terms

• Familiarity with payment is preferred

• BS in a quantitative field, MS preferred

Primary Job Responsibilities

Build, lead and manage an exceptionally high performing team. Design world class processes to:

  1. Proactively detect, monitor and interpret changes in the business that will impact transaction expense and loss;
  2. Ensure all transaction expense and loss related entries are accurately and efficiently recorded in the General Ledger (G/L) timely;
  3. Analyze, compile and read out monthly actual results in an a manner which provides assurance of integrity and meaningful  insights into the underlying drivers, and provides all necessary schedules and support for the preparation of the consolidated PayPal financial results package.
  • Work with the Risk Forecasting, Global Core Payments (GCP) and FP&A teams to ensure effective coordination and communication around forecasting and actual book results.
  • Serve as an independent, secondary check to the Risk Forecasting model selections; data, logic or process changes, “on top” adjustments and overall monthly results that serve as the basis for the transaction loss results. Ensure controls over the loss forecasting models and their respective processes are sound and consistently applied. Ensure change management and exception documentation policies and practices are effective and adhered to.
  • Work with GCP, BU’s and geographies to ensure new or changes to existing processors and/or services, fines, penalties, and other related activities get detected, vetted and concluded upon in a complete, timely and effective manner prior to needing to be recorded to the G/L.
  • Maintain quality, best practice reconciliations for all assigned accounts.
  • Manage the preparation of client audit schedules and work with the external auditors
  • Collaborate with the Global Financial Product (GFP), PD and BU teams on new product, processor, contract changes, currency launches and general market expansions that impact transaction expense and loss processes.


BA or higher degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA a plus


  • 10 or more years relevant work experience in accounting required, including experience in high volume, complex accounting processes. Transaction loss, credit card processing, or bank transfer processing experience (e.g. ACH) a strong plus.
  • 5 or more years of leadership and management experience with proven results for building and leading highly effective teams.
  • Experience with actuarial models and methods a strong plus
  • Experience with a large, global company. Public accounting experience a strong plus
  • Financial institution or payments industry experience a strong plus
  • Experience working with complex, multi-system environments including data extraction, interfaces, complex data marts and database reporting tools. Essbase, BW, MicroStrategy, a plus
  • Experience with top tier ERP systems required. Previous SAP experience a plus
  • System and process architecture, troubleshooting, reengineering and mapping
  • Project team level participation in new systems implementations a strong plus
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products
  • Interacting with external parties including auditors and other service providers

Primary Job Responsibilities 

eBay’s Corporate Development Team is responsible for sourcing, evaluating and executing the company’s strategic acquisitions, investments, joint ventures and divestitures. This responsibility is company-wide and global. Since 2004, eBay announced 25 acquisitions for total purchase consideration of approximately $9 billion. Of these transactions, 10 were in North America, 12 in Europe and three in Asia.

Reporting to eBay’s Vice President of Corporate Development, the Sr. Manager will play an important role in supporting the Corporate Development Team’s projects and activities. This will include:  

• Developing and implementing decision-making frameworks for evaluation of acquisition and investment opportunities.
• Identifying and evaluating (both independently and in collaboration with eBay’s Business Units) potential candidates for acquisition or investment.
• Conducting rigorous valuation analyses (using multiple methodologies) and business/integration case modeling in order to provide detailed guidance regarding potential acquisitions or investments.
• Coordinating due diligence reviews of potential candidates, and evaluating the due diligence results.
• Facilitating and managing acquisition and investment processes with cross-functional groups involving persons from our Business Units and our Corporate Strategy, Finance, Legal, Human Resources, Site Operations, Product Management and Product Development teams.  

Job Requirements

• Candidates for the Sr. Manager position should have the following: A BA or BS undergraduate degree, and over 5 years of relevant work experience after graduation. Work experience at a top-tier investment bank, strategy consulting firm or venture capital firm is strongly preferred – MBA and/or experience in a corporation are a plus. The ideal candidate will have a track record of consistent high-level achievement.
• Essential attributes include superior skills in financial and other quantitative analysis, written and oral communication, and the use of Excel and PowerPoint, along with keen attention to detail. Also desirable to have specific experience in acquisition or investment activities, and familiarity with Internet / e-commerce companies.
• Must have a demonstrated ability to work well in a team and with people in other functions, to multi-task and to thrive in an unstructured environment.
• Strong preference for candidates with a high level of energy and enthusiasm, and excellent sense of adventure, fun and humor.
• Understanding of selling and buying on eBay, and use of PayPal is a plus.
